Jakarta’s Biggest Cultural Park Presents: a Summer of Family Fun
29 June 2023 | Written by Chris Alexander

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (also known as TMII) has announced a summer schedule of events catering to families with children, with special focus on traditional games and cultural immersion. Activities on offer include an indoor children’s bicycle arena, dance shows, traditional puppet (wayang) performances, and various other entertainments.

“During this holiday, TMII will focus more on children’s activities and games, as we promote traditional games,” said TMII Director Claudia Ingkiriwang in a statement on Monday, 19 June. Like much of the cultural park, the activities offer a more traditional, family-orientated day out. “Let’s free children from playing with gadgets,” said Ingkiriwang in her statement. “We will give them fun physical activities and exploration,” she added.

The fun and physical activities on offer at TMII this summer include a range of traditional Indonesian pastimes for families to try. There’s egrang (bamboo stilts); congklak (Mancala); gasing (spinning tops); tapak gunung, or engklek (hopscotch); and a range of other traditional games involving toys like skipping ropes, kites and marbles.

Many of these childhood activities are relics from a bygone era – a nostalgic step back in time to the kampung of Indonesia’s recent past. For kids with an eye on the future, TMII also has a range of cutting-edge installations to explore this summer.

Working in collaboration with Jakarta’s transportation museum, the park now has its very own, state-of-the-art aeroplane simulator. As Ingkiriwang explains, “children can experience what it’s like to be a pilot.” With supervision from transportation museum officials, the simulator will be ready for take-off in July 2023.

Located in East Jakarta, close to the Pinang Ranti bus terminal, TMII is open every day from 6 AM until 6 PM and can be reached via a range of public transport. Electric scooters and carts are available on site to help visitors navigate the park. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate.
